Kanaleneiland is a neighborhood in the south-west of Utrecht. It was built during the sixties as a part of of a big city expansion project. Nowadays the neighborhood is being regarded as an impoverished area. 76% of its inhabitants are non-Dutch, and the crime rate is high. I used to live there for four years and I never had a bad experience. During that time I noticed national media were being more negative about the neighborhood then then I experienced it myself.
